Pakistan needs IT universities from Turkey more than any Sufism varsity!
Just couldn't resist. We really need to set our priorities right. While I have utmost respect for Sufism and other paths people follow to find religious and spiritual journeys but the needs of the country are drastically different. And least of them is spending billions rupees on Sufi university being set with Turkish help.
Do you know a few years ago, global gaming giant bought Turkish gaming company Peak for USD 1.8B? Does that tell you the amount of intellect, far sightedness and new high value opportunities which exist globally? Yes it may hire only a few hundred employees to be worth a unicorn but that is what is needed in Pakistan. We need to have talented workforce that is able to compete globally.
Pakistan is awash is young population deprived of real good quality knowledge. Can say with confidence that nearly half or more of the universities here produce graduates which would not fetch more than minimum wages in developed markets due to the concept of cheating, rote learning and centuries old syllabus. Yes, the number of graduates may be increasing but vast majority works on field.
Until and unless government diverts resources to encouraging women and men to study globally competitive syllabus, are incentivized to go to universities with dedicated AC subsidized public buses, interest free loans with strong covenants, taught by people themselves globally educated and with lesser barriers to entry for private sector institutes Pakistan will move towards oblivion.
The quality of teachers in Pakistan on average has declined materially due to high unemployment, low skill set and emigration of talent abroad. The working class that builds the economy, society and nation and increasingly moving abroad to offer better future to their generation. That has exacerbated after current Rupee plunge from PKR 160 to 280/USD in a jiffy.
So along with playing to the gallery and producing "Sufi" graduates, we need a mindset change and a vision to leap forward into the likes of proud, prosperous and nations with equality. Politicians will have to move forward from brick and mortar ways to buy growth and votes and think progressively. Or at least create an ecosystem where such industries thrive and Pakistan is able to export talent and service and fetch 10 times value. Sadly, policy makers are satisfied with sub par, inequal and delayed growth.
P.S those who haven't must watch the Indian movie "12th Fail"
